The Difference Between Counseling and Psychotherapy

These words ore often used interchangeably but really mean different things. Counseling is guidance, help rethinking one’s problems in a different light, addressing beliefs that keep us stuck. Psychotherapy literally means healing of the soul. This is the work that looks deeper into our family background, our spiritual and religious beliefs and the way that we’ve come to view and experience our lives through upbringing, experience and temperament. Both of these methods are helpful to our evolution and problem solving. Your work with Dean may involve one or both of these approaches depending on the problems and goals you present. We need to remember that insight does not necessarily lead to change. It can provide some relief to understand about why we’re the way we are but it takes creative thinking and action to make changes.
